Default cognos power play doubt - 09-09-2003 , 09:53 AM

I designed a relational database in sql server and i need to use cognos
powerplay on it. The thing is that the administrator of the tool who i'm
working with says that relational databases can not be used, only
databases with hierarchy are usefull to desing a cube. I think that
realtional database are new technology and a tool like cognos powerplay
should be designed for both databases types.

The client who i'm working for is tired of the lack of flexibility that
hierarchys force, because it makes you go to lower levels all the time
in things that you need to see at the same level, so that's why i
designed the relational database but i can't use it yet.

So my question is, Is theres a way to make a cognos cube with out the
tree (parent-child) structure??

Thanks

Hi,

PowerPlay cannot be used to report directly on relational data bases but it
can access cubes built in Microsoft Analysis Services which are a part of
the SQL Server shipment. This could be a compromise. If you really want to
do flat table reporting you might be better off using other tools from
Crystal Decisions, Business Objects, Brio or Cognos (Impromptu, ReportNet).
What kind of data are you analysing that the users don't want to see
aggregated, hierarchical data?

Kind regards,
Joerg

Good answer. Of course you can simply write a database query and have THAT
be the basis for your hierarchy. You can tell your client that PowerPlay
does not force you to only go lower in the hierarchir and that you can mix
dimensional info in the same report. This is something that's always been
present in the Reporter component of the product.
