Default Cognos - Custom time dimension - 06-17-2005 , 03:51 AM

Hi,

We are trying to build a custom time dimension for a cube in Cognos
Transformer. Our custom months are organized in the following way:

Jan: Dec 27 - Jan 28
Feb: Jan 29 - Mar 2
Mar: Mar 3 - Mar 30
.... and so on. We need to make Transformer understand our custom month
boundaries.

What we tried out was:
Open the dimension diagram for Time dimension, and drag the dates into
the correct month (For eg, Jan 29 into February etc.). When we generate
categories, the border dates are present in both months (ie. Jan 29
sits in both Jan and Feb). we excluded the category 'Jan 29' in January
month. now when we generate categories, the dates are lined up
correctly.

Is this a good way of going about the problem?

The above procedure works nicely with the Cognos sample data. But when
we try it with our data, it doesnt allow us to drag the date into the
month - it says 'error TR-0523 - You cant move this category because
its value is determined by its order value property'. we removed the
'order by' value from the dates. Still it doesnt allow us to move the
categories.

How do we solve this problem?
Also, are multiple time dimensions allowed in a cube ?

Thanks in advance,
Sat

First, multiple time dimension can be used but are not suggested (not sure
whether they are supported or not).

For the time dimension question, try creating a new time dimension using the
wizard and specify a lunar calendar. By playing around with the start and
begin dates of the period you should be able to make things line up. Good
luck.

I agree with Homer (email me Homer)

You cannot specify two "true" time dimensions however you can make a second
dimension "act" like a time dimension.

In my previous email I mentioned playing with the start and begin dates, in
hind sight, I would probably look at using the start and END dates, sorry
bout the typo. (been spending too many hours at work).

Good Luck,

You can only have one "time" dimension. (In transformer these have the
little clock icon.) However, You can make another time dimension that
is based on a date/time table. Just create it like you would any other
dimension.

If the fiscal thing does not work out, I would create your own date
dimension table, or add some columns to your existing one. Then join
your fact table to this table via the date key.

In transformer, you will create the date dimension like you would any
other dimension, but it won't be an official "time" dimension. ie,
don't use the date wizard and uncheck the time dim box.
