DataStage Best Practices and Standards Technical Specialist

Ø (In a Microsoft SQL Server Data-Warehouse Environment)



The contractor will be working under the general direction of the Executive
Director, Information and Technology Management, and in consultation with
the Director, Information Services and the Team Leader, Data and Integration
Services (end-user Client),



· The Contractor will provide services related to:

o The implementation of the Ascential Software ETL tools,

DataStage,

MetaStage and

Quality Manager.

Consulting services will span both the needs of the Data Warehouse team and
the Conversion team.



Ø Excellent Communication skills- verbal, whiteboard & Documentation (Word
type)

o Must be highly skilled presenter to executives, management, and
end-users (including operations and 'techies').



Ø First opportunity to crack Datastage Albertan Government Market--- more
to come.



Ø Individuals must be prepared to work on-site, in Edmonton, normal
government business hours 35.25 hours per week, no overtime.



Ø A good consultant will be able to add value and result in additional
add-on work for CSI if not for the person. Will also be able to re-deploy
this individual elsewhere thereafter.



Ø Need two relevant current references with contact information.



Ø Need to have the individual to confirm their skills against all points
listed here below.



Ø MANDATORY EXPERIENCE WITH SQL SERVER DATAWAREHOUSE & DATASTAGE PRODUCT
SUITE (AT LEAST 2+ PROJECTS)



Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

1. Provide an overview presentation of:

· MetaStage and Quality Manager, and how they are tied to DataStage.

2. Provide expertise on Best Practices and standards including:

· Naming conventions, templates and procedures that are relevant to the
Alberta Learning environment.


i. This includes identification, documentation and mentoring staff in
their use. Some of the areas to be covered are:

1. Setting up projects to facilitate sharing

2. Metadata management (importing table definitions, handling source
table definitions changes, sharing between tools)

3. Use and passing of parameters

4. Use of standard containers (i.e. for error logging)

5. Version control



3. Mentor data warehouse staff through the:

· Planning,

· Design,

· Construction and

· Implementation of two or three currently existing data warehouse ETL
process.

· These processes should be of moderate complexity where the staff
working on them, are familiar with the business rules. This ensures the
staff understands and can use the Best Practices, standards, templates, etc
developed in Step 2.



4. Provide guidance for the Conversion Proof of Concept project, assist
in resolving technical issues and provide input into the recommendations.

5. Assist in problem solving for the development and implementation of
the Basic Learner Population Data Mart.

6. Review the high level implementation plan for the data warehouse area
and drive it to the next level by developing a work plan/comprehensive list
of tasks/activities.

7. Develop an approach and plan for implementing MetaStage and Quality
Manager.



8. Review the installation and configuration of the ETL tools

· (DataStage, MetaStage and Quality Manager) at Alberta Learning.
Assist in any changes required.

9. Review, refine or develop a security model to be implemented.

· Document the model and procedures to support it.

10. Setup, in conjunction with Alberta Learning staff, of the development,
test and production environments to facilitate ease of use, including the
ability to accommodate additional projects.

· Review, refine or develop a methodology for migrating ETL objects
from development to test and from test to production without the need to
modify the objects or processes being migrated. Document the migration
procedures.



Specific Service Deliverables:



The Vendor's Resource will be involved in a team of contract and in-house
Resources. Solutions will be developed within Alberta Learning development
standards and practices.



The following deliverables are expected and will be monitored:

a) Estimation of effort required to complete assigned work (a work plan).

b) Successful delivery of assigned work within the supplied estimates
within quality assurance standards.

c) Weekly reporting to management detailing the status of tasks against
the work plan.

d) Documentation for all deliverables:


i. DataStage Best Practices and Standards document


ii. Comprehensive work plan for implementing DataStage in Alberta
Learning's data warehouse area.


iii. Documented approach and plan for implementing MetaStage and Quality
Manager


iv. Security model document and procedures to support it.


v. Migration (from development to test to production) procedures
document.





The Minister will pay the Consultant for the provision of services under
this agreement a sum not to exceed $FIXED Deliverable (Canadian Dollars).



The work plan and estimated Travel and Living costs are attached as Schedule
B. Not applicable - all costs to be included in rate -
