Check out GemStone at www.gemstone.com
They have a number of persistence / object cache tools, for both Java and
Smalltalk.

We use GemStone/S.

Hi,

Another commercial and really working OO database is Versant.
http://www.versant.com

By the way, the persistence model underlying the java specification JDO
is heavily inspired on the transparent persistence on Versant.

db4o just went open source:
http://www.db4objects.com

I think we are pretty much state-of-the-art since
- we supply a native Java version and a native .NET version
- our comparatively late start (2000) allowed us to use
modern language features (reflection) to build a completely
non-intrusive system:
- no enhancer or other pre-/post-processing
- no common base class
- store any object
- we supply modern object querying with query-by-example

You might want to look into Instersystems Cache'. It is a widely used
OO database on top of a hierarchical framework with relational
capabilities. It supports SQL ODBC, ADO, and other extensions.
