Default ODB Features Survey? - 09-11-2003 , 01:45 PM

What features are desired in an ODB?

1) Tables within a single file.
2) Transactions
3) Multiple files to break the 2GB Windows file limit
4) Tandem files to minimize effect of disk failure
5) Your ideas?

Are there any application features desired?
1) Application language (SQL, Smalltalk, ?)
2) User access controls (Passwords, etc., ?)
3) Automated GUI development
4) Natural Language Interface
5) Webpage Interface

Any special or unusual features?
1) 1Mb change file extraction, propagation, integration
2) Data mining, other real-time edits?
3) Real-time video processing
4) Source code
5) Encryption

What price do you want to pay for the features you choose?
1) Flat $1000, $100, ? per seat / copy
2) Volume price discounts
3) Free for individuals, priced for teams.
4) ?

How much support do you need?
1) Single purchase off-shelf solution
2) Technical manuals
3) Fee Consulting for new features / applications
4) Free Consulting for initial sample hookup
5) Prepurchase Consulting?

Thanks for your answers.

Kirk,

I don't understand this ..
Do you mean "Object Data Base"? In this case the questions are a bit
strange
as e.g. SQL is a language for relational databases and so on..

If you need an account of OODB features look e.g. at the
ODMG standard
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1558606475/

or the Object Database Manifesto
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs.cmu.edu...BMS/Manifesto/

Physical independence.

Um, yes.

As a customer, I want a perfect, zero maintenance product for free, but I
will settle for as close to that as I can get.

In my view there are no "relational databases" -- databases may store
objects but what are misnamed relational databases are distinctly
"databases" where the API has grown to be an application language, typically
SQL. Code/Date's definition was incorrect but helpful in promoting such API
functions as table joins/unions, etc.

Um, yes.

That shows that you are typical customer. ;->

You should add:
6) Biometric login
7) Admin Empowerment
8) Antcipated backup (done only IF a crash WILL happen)
9) AI selfhealing
to halfway complete the list.

That shows you have some sense of homour ... which might be
as big as your purse if you are using Larry's Orkel base...

But in this case you clearly redefined the meaning of "close to"
which usually means something near to "somewhere in this or some
other galaxy" ...

Of course not.

Take a look at the kind of person you are dealing with:

Yikes! ... makes our RDB / OODB debates look tame ;-)

Ooooh, that is um... different. Bit of a flamer, isn't he? I wonder
when he will come out to himself.
