Default MySQL installation: - 01-07-2007 , 06:43 PM

I downloaded Red Hat RPMs of MySQL 4.1.22 with the intention of running them
on Red Hat 9, kernel 2.6.

The downloded RPMs reside in my /home/me directory, and from there I
installed each package. The only location I can find in which MySQL files
exist, in a directory that
http://www.mysql.org/doc//refman/4.1...n-layouts.html confirms as being
one of 9 directory paths, is for bin, to wit:

___
/usr/bin:

msql2mysql, mysql_config, mysqld_safe, mysql_fix_privilege_tables,
mysql_install_db, safe_mysqld, mysqlaccess, mysqlbug,
mysql_convert_table_format, mysql_create_system_tables, mysql_multi,
mysqldumpslow, mysql_explain_log, mysql_find_rows, mysql_fix_extensions,
mysqlhotcopy, mysql_secure_installation, mysql_setpermission,
mysql_tableinfo, mysql_zap, comp_err, replace, perror, resolveip,
my_print_defaults, mysql_waitpid, resolve_stack_dump, isamchk, isamlog,
pack_isam, myisamchk, myisamlog, myisampack, myisam_ftdump,
mysql_tzinfo_to_sql, mysql, mysqladmin, mysqlcheck, mysqldump, mysqlshow,
mysqlimport, mysqltest, mysqlbinlog, mysql_client_test
___

As for "data," I cannot fins a /data directory anywhere in my Red Hat 9
platform. If there is one, please tell me where to look. I also don't know
where to find "man," "docs," etc.

This was not a tarball that I donwloaded (so i never unpacked on at the
"installation you choose (typically /usr/local/mysql)." BTW, I have never
seen a "/usr/local" directory either.

1. Is an RPM installation a good idea? If so, where can I find in my
system the directories data, docs, man, include, lib, scripts, share/mysql,
sql-bench?

2. What do I write for a .my.cnf file. All I get is failure when I attempt
to run the one I composed.

Thank you for any assistance that you can provide.
