Default I want to learn mysql......but - 02-19-2011 , 12:30 AM

I can't find a site that will help me even get started with the bare
basics. One site did show how to enter services.msc and setup things on the
logon tab. Just one catch, I get an error and can't go any further.

I have installed on my windows 7 home premium 64 bit, mysql version 6.0.

Like one site said, "now what?".
If I can't get beyond the initial password, how the hell am I supposed to
use it?
Can someone please help?

How about
http://ftp.ku.ac.th/pub/mirror/mysql.../tutorial.html
?

Another approach would be to buy a book. They often come with a CD or
with cases and examples downloadable.

Why don't you go to the source?

There is no MySQL 6.0. Maybe you mean 5.0?

http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/6.0.html

in the url it says 6.0

Sure. In alpha stages.

The existance of a sales prochure does not mean the product exists. The
existnace of doco pages that are (apparently) skeletons for eventual
releases does not mean the product exists. Using doco and tutorials for
a version that you do not have is eventually going to bite you on the
bottom.

So? How about that:

http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/7.0.html

Here it says 7.0!

http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/10.0.html

10.0 even!

Once upon a time, long long ago there was a plan to call the next
major MySQL release after 5.1 "MySQL 6.0".

Obviously plans have changed.

After 5.1 came 5.5. And after 5.5 we will have 5.6. There will
eventually be a 6.0 one day. But not today.

Except you rely on some seriously out-of-date mirror and install an
alpha version from the dark ages.

So I stand corrected: yes, you can download a stale MySQL 6.0 from
some mirrors. Most fresh (haha) release would be 6.0.11-alpha from
May 2009. You really would not want to use that.

Thanks. Maybe I will uninstall what I have then and install a proper
version.

That's likely to happen if you change your computer settings following
instructions you don't understand obtained in random blog entries you
found through googling

MySQL 5.5 for Windows has a nice installer with a graphical wizard that
guides you through all the installation steps and even suggests default
value for almost all stuff. Your description suggests that you got a
developer preview somewhere and you are trying to perform a manual
set-up with the help of some third-party unofficial documentation.

My advise is that you open http://www.mysql.com in your browser, find
the latest *stable* release in the download section (find "Community
Edition" if unsure) and add the *official* manual to your bookmarks (or
download it to your computer if you prefer). Then just double-click on
the installer and forget experiments by now.
