Default Seven seconds to open a very simple report - 03-17-2011 , 01:17 PM

I create a brand new 2007 db. Open the report designer - 6 to 8
seconds to load. Put in one label. Open the 'Report1' - 6 to 8 seconds
to show me this blank report with one label.

What's up?

Thanks

And it's not totally consistent. Most of the time it takes that long,
sometimes a little quicker, few times a lot quicker. The Form Designer
also has inconsistent open time but is for the most part way faster
than the report.

I tried this on a coworkers computer with the same slow form designer
and form open results.

Thanks.

There are probably dozens of possibilities, but since I don't
know much, I'll spew the one that I've experienced: graphics.

Do you have any images on the report?

No - this is an entirely new blank report created straight off the
designer with one label. No wizard, no graphics, nothing but a single
label.

Just booting the designer 'Report Design' button takes 6 slow count
seconds to show the designer. Not just on my machine either.

I think SP2 is the latest service pack too.

Once I had Norton AV on my machine. My app slowed to a crawl. There
was a checkbox, if I remember, of monitoring Office in Norton. Turned
it off and I was back running OK.

If this is a production app and has been running awhile without probs
then that probably is not the issue.

How long does the underlyin query take?

Is your default printer a networked printer - I recall that under 2003 this
used to cause a similar problem.
Try making your default printer something local to your machine (even if
it's a free pdf grabber) just to see if this makes a difference.

Best wishes
Tony

In this case there is no query at all. There may be some antivirus but
why would this affect just the report designer loading?

Ok, I'll take a look tomorrow. Thanks.

Bingo.

Thank you so much Tony - this was going to force me to waste a lot of
time trying to develop an alternate report mechanism since my database
was already finished and as usual - report design was last!

Now using the code here:

http://www.tek-tips.com/faqs.cfm?fid=5479

to switch between default network printer and "Microsoft XPS Document
Writer". Thanks a lot man!
