And I see Albert has explained how SQL Server hosting is quite
inexpensive.

For me it's 20 cents per text. But then I'm on a very inexpensive
prepaid plan and don't do texting.

Yes, and A lot default to 15 cents. I do not rely much on texting, but I
just am amazed at what they are charging for that used to be free.
The cell phone rates in Canada are insane, and they are to the point of
needing a big change or shakeup.

I suppose if the youth is willing to accept these rates, especially in
regards to texting there is not a lot we can do about this - but wow, just
wow, talk about something that is so overpriced.

My cell phone costs me $90+ per month, and in the US, it would be less then
half that.

At least Microsoft purchased Skype, and that will be coming to my windows 7
phone.....

This assertion is completely unproven at this point.

Only to you, been doing the above for about 5 years now...
But, as you admit, perhaps in voilation of the terms of service, and
not in a manner that is robust or safe (i.e., not really appropriate
for a production line-of-business application).

I think Albert is wrong on the way he's casting it. You may be able
to get away with what he's doing, but using a service that's clearly
provided for purpose of remote administration for multiple clients
to actually run the application (and not over a VPN) doesn't seem to
me to be a robust solution.

Perhaps doing it properly is not that much more expensive, but my
bet is a lot of these hosting companies don't even have the
mechanisms in place to do it right (i.e., over a VPN).

However, the point about flirting with terms of service is rather
correct concern brought up by David.

For this reason I tended to not really reveal a lot of details as
to how some of the setups are I have for these systems. In fact,
as long as the providers do not have a position on this issue, I
happy to continue what I am doing.
I don't think this is a viable strategy for proposing to clients how
they should architect their line-of-business applications.

Not really, they'd be on a texting plan so it'd be considerably
cheaper.

Mine costs me about $5 per month. I throw in $100 per year and have
money left over.

Mine's just a flip phone. No smart phone here. If I'm away from my
computer I don't want to see your email or read your FB status.
