Default Phone dialing - 09-16-2010 , 11:58 AM

I am writing a small app for my own benefit that dials a phone via a
modem. I have a modem so that's not an issue.

I was wondering, do people even dial phones using a modem anymore? Do
people even have modems conected to their phone?

Can one "dial a phone" over the internet?

Let's say you call ABC Company. When the phone answers at ABC, it might
say "Press 1 for English, 2 for Spanish". Can the 1 button be pressed
if on the internet or can that only be done via a phone connected to the
modem?

Just curious.

Usually not, because most people don't have their modem on the same
line as their voice line. I implemented phone dialers in a bunch of
apps back c. 1998, and they were never used by anyone because they
didn't have a telephone line shared between the modem and voice.

Hmm. Depends. I don't have a wired line at home, only a phone line
provided by the cable company (VOIP). My TiVo's modem dials out over
it every night and downloads the program data. It's slower than when
I had a real land line, but it's fast enough for this purpose.

As far as the TiVo's modem is concerned, is a real telephone line.
It doesn't know the difference.

If you mean something like Skype, though, you'd have to look into
it. I wonder if they have any scripting available? If so, you could
probably use that.

It probably depends on the interface provided by your VOIP provider.
My phone is just an analog telephone line to the computer. Skype
would be very different. If it's scriptable it might work, but I
strongly doubt it.

that is a long time ago...
but in those days I used

Application.Run "utility.wlib_AutoDial", stDialStr

if I press it now (Windows 7, no modem), it still does something:
it pops up 'the Autodialer'.
Wich suggests that if, if, that pressing OK would do the trick.
