In the microsoft.public.access.* groups, Microsoft has announced their
intention to shut those groups down and move to a web based system. Example
announcement:
Group: microsoft.public.access.modulesdaovba
Subject: Microsoft Responds to the Evolution of Online Communities

For those of us who prefer Usenet, it makes sense for us to make people
aware of this group, in the hope that it experiences a renewal of interest
as the MS ones disappear.

Okay, for now I have placed a message at the top of this page:
http://allenbrowne.com/tips.html

The heading reads, "No news... is bad news!"

But as long as news servers continue to carry them, they shouldn't disappear.

You guys do what you can. I've added a message to the top of this page:
http://allenbrowne.com/tips.html
headed, "No news... is bad news!"

No doubt spam is an issue, but I'm not convinced it's primarily about that.
It may be more about tracking clients and mining that information,
particularly as the cloud overtakes the desktop.

I couldn't agree more Allen. What's the best way to go about that, do you
think?
[snip]

I think it's mostly about spam control and MS "owning the app". They want
rid of 3rd party readers. This guy obviously agrees:

Spam is not an issue at all. I have 3 different news servers set up
as backups and none of the microsoft.public groups have any
significant amount of spam in them at all. Spam is entirely a red
herring.

MS wants control and they don't have that in Usenet groups.

This means they can shut out people like Michael Kaplan and me who
are willing to criticize Microsoft and its products, just like I was
banned from UtterAccess for posting a mildly strong criticism of
someone's wrong recommendations.

AFAIK, they have never shut our anyone for criticizing them. They delete
spam as they find it, and those posts which are abusive. That's it.

That's because when the newsgroup was propagated via newsgroup, they
recally couldn't except on their own servers, which still wouldn't
keep the posts by the banned from getting through to their servers.

The new system would enable something they were unable to do on the
old.

I'm not saying MS *will* do that, only that this is one thing that
closed systems enable.

How about adding a SIG line to our posts in microsoft.public.access...
newsgroups (in whatever time is left for them): "Access newsgroup support
will live on in USENET at comp.databases.ms-access!"
