Default OT. Filemaker - 05-06-2011 , 08:26 AM

I've never used Filemaker. I've never seen a FileMaker application.
The authors recently came out with FileMake Go where you can write
applications for the Ipad and Iphone.

Can it connect to other DB sources like SQL Server and other SQL
Servers? Access tables? Is it multi-user? Does it have a programming
language or is it mscro-driven? Just curious.

There used to be a downloadable demo that allowed you to explore it
pretty well. I forget what about it was limited.

I would think the product description page would answer most of
those question, but what I know is:

1. it can use a lot of data sources, but is not nearly as flexible
as Access is (because Jet can use EVERYTHING, practically).

2. it can get to Access tables via ODBC, if I'm remembering
correctly. Why one would want to do that, I don't know.

3. it has a primitive scripting language that can't do a whole lot
other than work with its own objects. That is, you aren't going to
be using Windows APIs.

It also doesn't use SQL natively, though it can connect to databases
that use SQL. To me, that's the complete show-stopper -- a database
front end that doesn't use SQL is a joke.

Thanks, David. I saw that it can connect to a variety of SQL databases.
I assume it can view and use data from the various servers. Not sure
what you mean "use SQL natively".

I was interested in the Ipad and Iphone database implementation. Those
are popular devices right now.

You don't populate your reports of forms with SQL statements, nor
execute SQL to update records. I find this a ridiculous inadequacy
in this day and age.

Last I heard it only had a macro language.

What does that mean?

Some people call VBA a "macro language," because they don't
understand it (and all they know is VBA macros recorded in Word and
Excel). And Access macros are not much like other macros in other
contexts.

I'm actually thinking about getting into FileMaker.. of course I'd be using SQL Server because I have enough cojones to use a real fucking database unlike you Jet crybabies who have ONLY ever used pint-sized databases.

I don't think that jet is reliable enough for a single user and a single record.
