I agree that a skilled admin could get Samba to work with Jet. As for speed,
an old Novell 3.2 server was noticeably faster opening BE files then the new
Windows 2003; helped by adding persistent links to the BE.

The problem that the OP is facing is seemingly related to a dedicated
NAS device. I have a similar device, bought from a store, and it
shares the same problem. My guess is that the implementation of
SAMBA / Linux just isnt workable for Jet, and unfortunately the
ability to modify the device is only through firmware modifications.
This device allows you to do such things but I am not familiar enough
with writing firmware for it to create a workabkle solution - I fear
that I will turn it into a brick. Building one from scratch at least
you could troubleshoot and correct, but that takes away the 'off the
shelf' convenience of the device(s) you have available in the market.

Does anyone know of a NAS device, commercially / retail available that
doesnt suffer this issue? That could be another solution for the OP. I
am just not aware of one.

Look for devices using Windows Data Server or Windows CE. Dell has some
large ones with Data Server.
