I would imagine
however that moving towards managed code such as .Net would be your
best option as it is 'standardised' on Windows platforms
Also I don't trust Microsoft when it comes to .Net given how they
dropped the VB 6 platform.

Of course any of the other product vendors mentioned could go under
too.

Hmm, maybe I should see if they have an escrow agreement where if they
go under that the source code is made open source.

An Escrow agreement would be particularly useful. But only if it can
be enforced. I've seen escrow go badly sideways in other matters where
the intentions were good but the lawyers were better. If there's money
to be had you can eb sure that someone wants a piece of it.

I read somewhere, and I am not sure if it is true or not, that Ruby
can be compiled to a standalone exe for targeted platforms. I know it
needs a runtime to run as 'Ruby Code' or whatever they want to call
it, but I am sure that I read an exe can be produced that has no
dependancies. I will have to dig around for that. I remember thinking
that was odd as I have only ever seen it used as a server side alost
scripting like language and of course used in Google Sketchup. Come to
think of it I read that you can make an exe from Java bytecode too,
but I am not sure how.

Cheers

IMO it is a great pity that MS Office does not directly and
natively support .Net internally. I would love to see the ability
to add a .Net module or .Net Class module to some of my projects
in addition to the already existing VBA module and class module
types.
If I'm not mistaken, you can already do this in all the Office apps
except Access, no?

I asked in a C# newsgroup that very question. The response was
that because I do not want to require admin installs that this
could be very troublesome if the framework on the target PC needed
updating. This sounds real ugly.
I think the dependence on the .NET runtime is awful. On the other
hand, they've done a lot better with it than Sun has with the Java
runtime, which gets broken on just about every PC I've ever seen.
