Default export SQL and file layout to reuse - 07-25-2009 , 05:26 PM

We get certain quarterly data in column-width format.. I hate having
tor respecify the file layout every time and we would make fewer
mistakes if it was stored somehow more programmatically.

You don't state what you're doing - I'm assuming you're importing the
data. If so, you can use the Import Specification to save the file
format. Then use TransferText or TransferSpreadsheet or
TransferDatabase and the specification, depending on the file type you
are importing/linking, to import/link the data.

- From the main menu File > Get External Data > Import Data. An import
dialog box will appear - click the Advanced button. The Import/Link
specification dialog box will appear - set up the form and save the
specification. Close the dialog box and return to the import dialog
box. Either complete the import/link or cancel the action. Use the
saved, named specification w/ the Transfer... methods.

Thanks, When I was importing text I saw some chance to save the spec
(Schema.ini?) and then it said something about VBA..

Is there any way I can save the existing spec for future use?

Yes, as I stated in my previous post - use File > Get External Data >
Import [or] Link. After you select a file (any file text will do for
example purposes) click the "Advanced" button on the import/link dialog
box. This will bring you to the Import/Linked File Specification dialog
box. The "Specs..." button will show you currently saved
specifications. You can use one of those, or create your own & save it.
