Default Database in an unexpected state - 11-30-2004 , 08:46 PM

I just started doing some developer work for this small company.
The guy before me built some databases that are used by various departments
around the organization.
Why any of this stuff was left accessible(ouch) to a user is beyond me, but
one of them must have done something as the database can't be opened as it
refers to the subject.
Error message:
"The database has been converted from a prior version of MS Access by using
the DAO CompactDatabase method instead of the Convert Database command on
the Tools menu (Database Utilities submenu). This has left the database in a
partially converted state."

Here's the best part. When I notified the Network Administrator that I
needed the backup restored, he waited too long and the current condition
became the backup(Novell).
Anyone have any ideas? I've tried to import and convert w/o success, keep
getting a wierd error about not being the owner even after I changed
permissions and make myself the owner of a local copy.
