Default Anybody use Filemaker? What is it? How does it work? - 11-01-2011 , 08:35 PM

I am just being curious as it seems it is the only "database"
development program for the Mac (not that I want to come out with a
Mac version of our software as our Access 2003 application is
presently running fine with Parallels).

I just spent a bunch of time at Filemaker's website and I am still
confused on how it works and what exactly it does. Does it have a
programming language like Access has VBA? What kind of applications
can be built and distributed? I do like how it can build things that
will also run devices like an iPhone and iPad.

Again, I am just being curious.

Oh, and it also builds web applications unlike Access. Just being
curious!

Why not ask at a forum which focuses on filemaker?

I am looking for a comparison to MS Access from an Access developer's
point of view. It surely can not be as powerful as Access?

You might find it hard for anyone who knows Access who has also used
filemaker.

I personally looked at it very briefly when intriegued by its web
creation capabilities but was not impressed with its capabilities and
cut short my investigation into it.

Ever hear of Servoy? I have a buddy who rewrote his Access 2003
application with it (took him almost a year to get over the learning
curve and get it done) but now he has an application that will run on
the Web, Windows, and Mac with very little changes - if any. It's
Javascript based.

Last time I looked no. It only had macros.

Well, Access 2010 does do web applications with macros.

Also a soon to be released version of the Auto FE Updater will allow
you to update your Access FE via a web server.

Never heard of it before but it looks interesting.
