Default Any one have experience using a handheld scanner with Access? - 02-16-2011 , 05:20 PM

Hi,

A client wants to use a QuickScan QS600 Plus (or whatever will work I
suppose) with our store module.

Does any one know if bar code scanners will work with Access (2003 in
our case) text boxes on forms? Any one been successful using them
with an Access data entry form?

Thanks,

-paulw

Another top post by me. Shame, shame! :-)

Do you know if it is possible for the user to be able to also manually
enter in the item number (or whatever) into a text field?

If you are going to use a scanner with a keyboard wedge interface, then
you will have to have a text box on the active form with the focus when
the user scans the barcode. The contents of the bar code will be
inserted directly into this text box just as though it was typed in
from the keyboard. So in this case the answer is yes.

If you go for a scanner with a Serial or USB HID interface them you
will have to specifically code an alternate method for the user to get
data into the program manually.

As to your first post (how does it get hooked up to the computer), it
doesn't matter unless the scanner wants to be plugged into a port that
is not present on the computer. In the olden days you would unplug the
5 pin DIN keyboard cable, plug in the scanner cable in its place, and
finally re-plug the keyboard into a connecter in the scanner cable,
hence the keyboard WEDGE moniker. Today most keyboards are USB
devices, and most Keyboard Wedge scanners are also USB devices. You
will need to get the specs on the specific scanner you are going to use
to know what will and will not work on your hardware.

This stuff aint rocket science. Get a scanner and start playing
around. If you run into trouble come back here with a specific
question. Someone will be able to get you going.

Thanks again Ron! The potential client is going to send us their
scanner as it's their down season. Cool! I can't wait!

We use a scanner all the time. It is a Metrologic scanner with a
wedge. We just purchased a new USB scanner. t seems to work OK also,
but we have not tested it completely yet.. We write barcode labels,
put them on Petri dishes to identify the sample. When the colonies
have been grown and counted. We scan the Petri dish label and put in
the counts into the computer. The barcode label identifies the record
and the counts are put into the correct field. This has worked with
Access 2003 and now Access 2007. Of course you need the barcode fonts.
but they are just fonts in the font folder.

Exactly what I want to do with one! :-)

Thanks so much.
