Default Access 97 SR 2 - 06-28-2010 , 07:45 PM

While I have been able to getAccess 97 running under XP, I still
can not get any SR 2 to install.

SR2CHK.EXE gives the same error that any SR 2 gives when I try to
install it, namely

The Microsoft Office 97 SR-2 patch cannot be applied to your computer.
Either Office 97 is not installed on this computer, or there are files
from multiple versions of Office 97 on this computer. Try installing
Office 97 or running the latest SR-1 patch to correct the problem. Or,
contact Microsoft Technical Support for further assistance.

Covering the points in the message in order:

It is.
There are no other versions.
I have reinstalled Access. Is that sufficient?
I have.

Any ideas?

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

Is A97 on the CD the SR-1 version? Have you installed SR-1?

Are you the administrator on the computer when you install SR-2?

I believe so. I gave myself that and deleted the preconfigured
account. I have had no problems that suggest I did it wrong.

Then I'm puzzled. I just installed A97 on a system last week and it
worked flawlessly. Inside A97 when you go to Help >> About I
presume it states SR-1 just below Microsoft Access 97?

Yes.

The only thing that I can think of that is the slightest bit odd
about my setup is that I do not run the full Office 97 suite. I
installed Word and Excel, because that is all I usually use. I then
added Access.

I've had that happen to me as well. Try uninstalling all of Office and use a
registry cleaner to make sure everything is gone. Then reboot and reinstall
Office including Access.

Is this by any chance Office Small Business edition? That version
had terrible problems like this back in the Office 97 time period.
It would very often be unable to recognize the appropriate service
pack that was installed. My solution was to always install Access
from Office Pro, whether or not it was along with SBE or not
(obviously, that was only legal if you also had a legal license for
standalone Access).

There used to be an "eraser" program to clean up after you
uninstalled Office 97. I still have it somewhere, I'm sure. In fact,
I very smartly saved a shortcut to the Knowledge Base for it, and
you can get it from here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q176823/

I found that it worked extremely well when I used it.
