Default Access 2010 & Norton 360 - 10-29-2010 , 02:47 PM

I ran into performance issues when running Access 2010 on Window 7 pro after
Norton 360 was installed. The BE is stored on a file server, the FE in on
the Workstation. Before Norton the Application would open in 5 to 10
seconds, after 30 to 60 seconds. The forms would open almost instant, now 5
to 15 seconds. Scrolling records within the forms would be instant, not 1 to
5 seconds. I tried adding the BE and FE location to the NO scan list and set
the server to trusted by Norton. The only thing that work was to disable
Auto-Protect. Norton tech support has not been able to help. Has anyone else
seen this problem?

I won't use any of these AV/Security products:

AVG
Symantec/Norton
McAfee

They are all piles of crap that soak up huge amounts of CPU cycles
but barely do the job they're designed to do.

I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials instead, and it is much more
efficient, and so far as I can tell, equally effective (if not
moreso).

The whole AV/Security thing is in my opinion a massive scam. The
heavy hitters in the field are not really interested in solving the
problem and don't actually implement the kinds of techniques that
would actually protect a computer.

I suppose it comes down to what you can afford v. what you can't afford to
lose in the form of potential virus corruption and invasion.

I have been using Zonelabs Zone Alarm full Security Suite for years now and
it is the best I have used by far, and continually recommend it to anyone
that asks about online protection, be it Web or Email.

It's a US based company and comes with a 15 day free trial period, after
which, assuming it meets your criteria, you can even pay via PayPal, which
is a great addition.

Symantec / Nortons would have to be the most resource hungry and memory
hogging application I ever had the misfortune of ever installing.

As David stated, steer well clear of the freebie's as they just don't do the
job, and fall short big-time...

Cheers

HTH
Mark.

Maybe there's another "David" posting in this thread, but I didn't
make any such recommendation. Indeed, I recommended using a free
program, Microsoft Security Essentials.

I do recommend against AVG nowadays, but that's in its free or paid
version, because it's ineffective, breaks often, and is very, very
intrusive. It also uses a helluva lot CPU cycles.

That was not the case 2 years ago, though. Once they got success for
their free version, they ruined it.

Maybe the product is good, but I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole
after reading about their latest tactics.

They've put a lot of customers off side with this foolhardy tactic.

That's exactly what AVG did, and was the last straw for me.

David & Tony

As always, you are both a wealth of information that keeps me coming back to
learn more.

Tony, thank you for the link to GRC, and David, you are most certainly
correct regarding Steve Gibson & Zonelabs.

Once I started reading throught the link Tony provided, it became evident I
was wrong, which seems to be a regular occurence of late...

Thx again

Cheers
Mark.
