Default A2010. Can be accessed by phone? - 07-27-2010 , 11:04 AM

If an Access app is published to the web and a person is a Sharepoint
user can that person access the database via his cell phone?

AFAIK, yes, even if the phone's not a Windows Mobile device. i.e an iPhone
(or iPad) should be able to work too.

They work great on my iPad.

So, the answer is yes.

When you create a SharePoint site, there is options to create a mobile phone
view/site (in fact it done by default). However, I not looked into specific
support for these Mobile sites using Access web services. (perhaps someone
else who doing this now will chime in).

The quality of rendering of the access applications on the iPad is just
fantastic. Since my iPad is really a "big" iPhone", then rendering of the
access applications on the iPhone should work well (but, they are bit
small). To be fair, I did have to tweak a few buttons sizes and font sizes,
but then again I likely would have had to do this for any computer running
the Safari browser.

Thankfully, Microsoft adopted open supported standards for SharePoint and
that also thus means Access Web services. Hence no ActiveX or Silver light
is required. A standard browser such as the one running on my iPad or Linux
works just fine.

This also means that smart phones with a web browser will work. I can't
vouch for a decent experience in many cases, but I can say that it is VERY
likely I will be producing some "small" reports for some customers to view
sales numbers by hitting the SharePoint site with their SmartPhones.

Tangential question: how much memory does your iPad have?

I'm shopping.... and wondering if the 16-gigger is real-world
usable.

I figured if they can run a web app they could but it's nice to hear
verification.

Which brings me to a question . Will you set up a generic "customer"
account or will you pay the user fee for each client?

I have the 16 model. I not installing music and not very many applciaions,
so it is more then enough.

If you going to install lots of pictures + music, then perhaps a 32 is a
better choice. However, as a browser for daily use, and a few applications,
then I found the 16 is just fine.

Hi Salad,

What would be the cost comparison between having a group host the
Sharepoint Server, and having your own? I would imagine that if your
number of daily hits is high enough the ownership angle is a better
option. Just rent some rack-space somewhere and a managed server, or
stick it in the cloud. Just a thought.

I don't know. Albert mentioned something about $4,400 (don't know if
Canadian, US, or what) in a post somewhere regarding Sharepoint (but I
could be mistaken). I don't know what other additional costs are
incurred (besides tech support and installation/setup costs. Does one
need SQL Server and other software as well?) I suppose that $4,400 is a
one time fee. How many user licenses come with your Sharepoint server?
Somebody besides me would know but I suppose the fee would be a 1 time
shot as well). How much does it cost per additional user license? I
don't know.

On hosting the costs would be recurring, monthly, yearly near as I can
tell. Let's say you want to survey your employees (100 of them) about a
new employee benefits plan. Does one purchase 100 licenses for a month
(because this survey is a one time deal) and then go back to the
original amount of licenses after the survey)? I think that would be a
headache for both the hoster and the company person managing the
company's hosted site.
