and it seems that security auditing does not keep track of the user's
IP even if the user has logged in, let alone when he cannot
authenticate.

Alternatively you could install a network sniffer on the server side
and capture all packets which contain the IP of the sender. For better
efficency you might look into applying a filter which will, well,
filter, based on some qualifing criteria so you don't capture
everything

which makes a start at sniffing Data Access Server IP packets by
adding a protocol plug-in into the Wireshark protocol analyser.
