Most projects wouldn't think it necessary to provide a tool to calculate an md5sum because it's already available on Linux and it's easy to get hold of any how. I guess not providing an md5sum utility is like not providing Acrobat Reader if you happen to include PDF files. -- Paul Mason ------------------------------------------------------------------------ _______________________________________________ Info-Ingres mailing list Info-Ingres (AT) kettleriverconsulting (DOT) com http://www.kettleriverconsulting.com...fo/info-ingres |

Hey Richard, I've used gnu core utilities on windows XP without a problem. Setup takes 5 min. In the command window I needed add the the directory to my PATH. Have you tried installing them on Vista? To all who answered, thank you. As I had downloaded the win32 version for trialling on Vista 32 bit, I ended up getting hashcalc from http://www.slavasoft.com/ as suggested by Martin. Mind you, the Gnu toolset if it was available for win32 would be even more useful. Anyway ... If pigs could fly...... Thanks again Richard. -----Original Message----- From: info-ingres-bounces (AT) kettleriver...ting (DOT) com [mailto:info-ingres-bounces (AT) kettleriverconsulting (DOT) com] On Behalf Of Richard Harden Sent: Thursday, 11 December 2008 7:46 p.m. To: 'Ingres and related product discussion forum' Subject: [Info-Ingres] Ingres downloads, what tool should I be using to verify the md5 checksum is correct? Greetings All, I have just downloaded the win32 version of Ingres 9.2, The download page supplies an MD5 checksum so I can verify my download, which is great, But what tool / how do I check this value? Hmmmm ... maybe its the Vicodin I'm on for messing up my back but .... WHY ON EARTH would you use a utility inside a package to verify that the package is "valid"? If I were the hacker, I would make sure that supplied md5sum utility in the package I "hijacked" returned the correct checksum. Again, maybe I'm just stoned or overly paranoid. At some clients, we are required to run md5sum from a CD deemed to be certified. *Now that might be a bit extreme. But using the checksum program included in a package to check the package itself is ... nuts. Mike Leo |
