Default Long Name Support in Ingres 10 - 04-24-2010 , 04:42 PM

Long name support has been available for some time now in a special
version of Ingres 10 community edition build 115. That support is now
available as part of regular Ingres 10 community edition builds,
starting with build 122, which is now available for download. The prior
community edition build 115 is no longer available for download.

There are a number of differences between the current build and the
prior 115 build. In particular, the max size of long names has
increased from 128 to 256. In addition, the class of objects that
support long names is more restrictive than it was in the prior version.
See 'Long Identifiers - Ingres Community Wiki'
(http://community.ingres.com/wiki/Lon...#Documentation) for
specifics.

Note also that in this build, while long name support is fully
available in the DBMS, support is not available in form-based utilities
like "tables". Also, given that this is an alpha version of the
product, there are some known bugs in the build. E.g., using the
"Server_List" feature in ipm will error out. This particular bug will
be fixed in the next community edition build.

Feedback on your testing can either be provided to 'the forum'
(http://community.ingres.com/forum/co...abases-ingres/) or via a
'Service Desk' (https://servicedesk.ingres.com) issue.

One important note about this 122 build is that because the long name
feature entails major modifications to the Ingres system catalogs, it is
not possible to upgrade any existing pre-122 Ingres 10 installations to
the 122 build.

If you need to preserve your data from your earlier installations, you
will need to unload your data and then reload it in a fresh 122
installation.

Note that additional catalog changes are also planned in upcoming
builds. So, the lack of inter-build upgrade will also apply in those
builds as well.
