Default Ingres standard... - 09-02-2011 , 11:48 AM

Hello,

as I see all activity in Ingres Corp are focused on VectorWise. I wish
them luck. Open source bussiness, in my opinion, is not as brilliant as
showed in press. So, Ingres Corp, be successfull in BI. That is the only
way to make Ingres standard free. But we, community, should take some
steps to allow access to recent builds. The last build from Ingres Corp
is 121. Last tested is 122b see: 'Test Suite - Ingres Community Wiki'
(http://community.ingres.com/wiki/Test_Suite). I am a little affraid...
There were some opinions that Ingres standard will not be abandoned. Can
someone tell for sure that it is true?

Happily you are mistaken. You don't see all that is going on, and one
big thing that is going on is the Ingres geospatial project. It's not a
secret and the planned delivery date has been publicly mentioned as
being later this year. It is Ingres, *not* VectorWise.

Yeah, I'd have to agree that a very great deal of nonesense is spoken
about the merits of open source and it is frequently attributed
near-mystical powers to energize development. But open source is not
actually harmful. (I'll admit I've changed my tune on that point.)

Not sure what you mean by that, but I do agree Ingres needs to succeed
with VectorWise. Ingres being powerful and supported and robust and
platform-independent and standards-compliant count for...not much. Most
companies quite rightly like to introduce the minimum amount of
diversity into their organizations. If they're already running MySQL or
PostgreSQL they need a *really* overwhelming reason to bring Ingres in.
VectorWise is it. Once you build a VectorWise team you have also built
an Ingres team. Then you can show MySQL and its kind the door.

It is only September 1st. Most of the world seems to have been on
holiday the last month. And besides, Ingres 10 is probably stabilising.

I can tell you for sure that Ingres is still far and away the major
profit centre for the company. I can also tell you that I had lunch
with an exec responsible for the Ingres business in Europe and he was
murmuring about the amount of "quality time" he was getting from Steve
Shine, who is taking a keen interest in his doings because of the
importance of Ingres.

janusz, I think I understand what troubles you, but I humbly believe it
is a waste of time to discuss it here as Ingres officials have focus
somewhere else, and judging from the last UK IUA conference here in
London, it most likely won't change in the near future. (They do not
even believe support for PHP/Python/Ruby/PERL languages is important!
What else to say!?) The Geospatial project is back (as Roy reminded
you), which is a good I thing...

Keep in mind one thing though - you can always get the latest Ingres
source, and build it yourself. Nobody stops you from doing that!
