Default Ingres Splinter Group? - 02-18-2011 , 03:39 AM

Now that Ingres Corp. have bet their business on Vectorwise and
clearly turned their backs on the traditional Ingres RDBMS; is there
any truth in the rumour that a significant number of talented Ingres
Engineers, Technical Support specialists and Marketing staff, that
recently parted company with Ingres Corp., may form their own rival
Ingres Database Company once their 'golden handcuffs' have been
removed?

I know it is Friday but I'll bite...

I've seen a lot of people leave Ingres Corp. (via LinkedIN) recently,
and I must confess that I am quite concerned about what the future
holds.

I suppose that a 'Splinter Group' may happen, but I feel it is most
unlikely.
Customers like me want a single point of contact. I don't want to
choose between rival distributions of the same thing like MySQL and
Postgres.

As for future development of the Ingres RDBMS, I am seriously worried.
If Ingres doesn't move forwards and catches up with the likes of
Oracle and SQLServer then I don't see Ingres being around at all in 5
years time.

Not everyone wants or needs Vectorwise. It is a seriously cool product
that I would love to get into, but my company has absolutely no need
for it.

"clearly turned their backs on the traditional Ingres RDBMS" is simply not
true. Take a look at www.ingres.com

Engineering, Support, Services and Education all still in place.

Where is it "clearly" stated that Ingres have "turned their backs"

Is there such a rumour? I suspect you are better placed than most
to answer your question. Tell us, do.

It'd be great to expand the "ecosystem"; there's lots of interesting
potential projects and Ingres Corp can't pursue them all.

Whoever spreads such rumour obviously knows nothing about Ingres RDBMS
and VectorWise...

VectorWise simply CANNOT work alone! So those people who talk such
non-sense should wake up, seriously... For VectorWise to work you *NEED*
Ingres RDBMS! Moreover, it is ridiculous to use VectorWise for small
tables for which normal HEAP/HASH storages would be much better choice.

See VectorWise as yet another, powerful, column-based storage engine
for the Ingres RDBMS. Similar, but much more powerful than, for an
example, InfiniDB or Infobright for MariaDB/MySQL RDBMS.

In the last 2 years the economy has been tough and many clients have
downsized or evolved.
While losing some of our clients new sites and opportunities are popping up.
Our software and systems need to get smarter and cheaper at the same time in
order to win that business.
Ingres has helped. We are easily able to compete against MSSQL, Oracle
solutions at 5-10 times the price.
Our last 3 or 4 implementations involved either replacing MSSQL with Ingres
or considering options and choosing Ingres as preferred platform.
Price is a big factor. Not just licensing costs but ongoing maintenance,
reliability, upgrades.

You're kidding right? Look at the release notes for the latest versions and
patches.
I have trouble keeping up with all the new functionality.

My clients are strongly reliant on the stability of Ingres and related
products.
I get better levels of technical service and follow up than I do any other
technical product.

Vectorwise is an opportunity for new sales and additional development. I'm
planning to target just bigger clients.

No offence Roy, but you appear to have seriously lost touch with
what's REALLY happening with Ingres.

Please take off your rose tinted spectacles and consider using your
position in the UKIUA to start asking serious questions!

Sure, there are definitely customers who eagerly adopt the new
features. You are lucky to have one. I am jealous; those customers are
rare. Most either don't want to fix what ain't broke, or they've
painted themselves into a corner (e.g. with horrible row-at-a-time
applications that are always pretty much impervious to any server-side
enhancements).

Well I for one wouldn't know. But I've seen Emmas blog and she's
dancing a jig. It doesn't sound like a "low morale" jig.

their
investment in the Ingres RDBMS?
As a custom [sic], I rely on a capable, well supported product. Long
may that continue. I see no reason to be deeply concerned right now, and
if other customers are deeply concerned then it seems to me they're
being rather quiet about it.
