Default [Info-Ingres] Upgrading PC client to 9.2.0 - 01-09-2009 , 08:00 AM

Hi All,

I'm trying to upgrade my PC Client install to 9.2.0 but it has frozen
when attempting to start ingres. The PC was running 9.1.1 (int.w32/103)
+ p13186.

It stalls at the start of the recovery server and pops up a screen:

Ingres 9.1.1 Application

Ingres 9.1.1 Application has encountered a problem and needs to close.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.

There is nothing of note in the errlog.

The version.rel says:

II 9.2.0 <int.w32/143>

Anyone got any idea what its bitching about? How to proceed?

Hi Martin,

We have been installing the 9.2.0 (123) on our clients and I found the
only way to eliminate any problems was to completely uninstall and
remove all traces of OpenROAD and THEN Ingres, including deleting the
II_system environmental variables and removing from the path, rebooting
then starting from fresh. Many of our clients held legacy software,
users and system variables, so this was the only way to get rid of them
all ;-)

In order for our Activex dlls to work, we also needed to have MS Office
2007 and min of SP2 on Windows XP. We also needed a fix for the
Workbench Active X's P12638

Joan.

Hi Joan,

God almighty its supposed to be an upgrade not an install! I presume you
lost all your IngresNET settings and seethed mightily. I know I would
have.

Did you have any trouble with oiapi.dll?

Did you report any of this to IngresCorp?

That sounds like a bad day at the office!

This really shouldn't be that difficult. I'll raise an issue with
IngresCorp and we'll see what happens.

Oh yes had to copy all the Oi files for the people that had been running
the ABF application, but this wasn't very many. I think in all there is
about 15 libraries that need going back into the Ingres\files directory
in order to run our ABF application.

Have a look at the iircp.log file.it's the recovery's server log
file;if the server has an error it will appear there.Maybe there is an
issue with your transaction log file configuration or size

Hi Marty,

I have seen a similar prob upgrading from 9.1.0 to 9.2. (OpenROAD not
involved - that just makes things complicated).

It seemed that upgradedb was hung on iidbdb. I think it was waiting for
exclusive access conflicting with rmcmd server. No crash message though.
I had to force shutdown/kill the upgrade process, shutdown/restart then was
able to manually upgradedb each database.

It has occurred for me on windows more than once. I cant recall if I've
experienced the problem on linux/solaris. Not yet had a chance to explore
further.

Hi Joan

We experienced the same problem going from 4.1sp2 to 4.1sp3.

Which version of OpenROAD / Ingres net were you replacing? How was the
original software installed?

Some of our original installations were installed as windows user
"administrator" with a sequence of about 5 packages. An attempt to upgrade
a pc which had been installed as administrator usually ended in a mess. If
it had been installed as a different user (with local admin privilege) the
upgrade was smooth. A clean uninstall required disable the ingres net
service, reboot, uninstall openROAD then ingres then reboot.

Hi Paul,

Most of the clients were the administrator on the machines, so that
wasn't always the root of the problem, however we had a local 'ingres'
administrative user on the machines, this enabled the service to keep up
and running in any event i.e. multiple users using the PC. Once we
found all the niggles that caused the upgrade problems, I created a set
of instructions which removed everything cleanly and created a fresh
install in about 20 minutes. We only have at most about 15 - 20
concurrent uses using the OpenROAD application the rest use web
applications, so it wasn't toooo much of a problem and ALL new pc's are
bought and preinstalled with the new version of OpenROAD/Ingres through
our PC Support department, it was only legacy PC's that caused a
problem.

The old ABF application only posed a problem on 4 machines and it's a
department that keeps downsizing......

Joan.
