Default [Info-ingres] Status: DISABLE_DUAL_LOGGING - 09-02-2005 , 03:35 AM

Hi Everyone,

I'm running IngresII2.5 on a true64.

I've just noticed for the last few days that a logstat shows a status line
with the message DISABLE_DUAL_LOGGING. Which according to my
notes means that the logging system is in the process of disabling dual
logging.

But it seems to be taking its own sweet time about it. I've managed to
track the appearance of this message back to sometime between 14:41
and 14:46 on 26th August. Ooops!

However, there is nothing in the errlog or the iircp.log for around this
time frame. In fact the system looks suitably cool.

There does not appear to be anything wrong with the dual log itself.
For a start the logstat shows:
Active Log(s): II_LOG_FILE,II_DUAL_LOG
Which should indicate the dual log is cool.
Furthermore, it shows that...
ii_log_file read 27619 ii_dual_log read 945529
write complete 1521614 dual write complete 1521614

Furthermore, the log is cooked and has the same time stamp as the
primary log file, so it does appear to have transactions being written to
it.

So the writes look cool.

But why the discrepancy in reads? That may be some form of red-
herring as the discrepancy there has been going on for some time - well
before the DISABLE_DUAL_LOGGING was flagged.

Does anyone have any idea why this message has occurred? Or what
to do about it?

I have a schedulled shutdown for this installation next Monday
afternoon. I'm thinking that as there does not appear to be a genuine
problem that I'll ignore the status line for now and wait till after the
restart to see if it comes back.

You always have to write to both logs, so the writes completed should be
(and are) identical. But you only need to read from one or the other. It
looks like something favours reading from II_DUAL_LOG. Who knows why, but
it can't matter.

Nope, never seen it. (If I weren't immersed in writing a proposal that has
to get to the courier this afternoon, I'd snoop around. Instead I shall
watch this space.)
