Default [Info-Ingres] Ingres problems at a distance.. - 02-20-2009 , 07:26 PM

Greetings all,

I have a II2.6 server running in Auckland (wintel virtual server on an esx
cluster)
That works fine for local network users, but the users i have running the
same applications against the same databases but from a distance (500km) are
having problems.

Local client pc logs show 'session disconnected at the remote '
Server errlog.log shows exactly the same thing.

Seeing as how the errors are the same, it sort of points the problem at the
network.

I had similar problems when the server was a solaris box so I don't think it
is server related.

Network ping times remain low from both ends (32 -50ms) consistently

The remote users can connect with less errors during usual
out-of-normal-working hours, but once 0800 passes, the disconnect problems
re-commence.

I have raised an issue with Ingres Corp, who have posited a possible
solution (required changing a flag in the underlying ESX server
configuration)
Which I cannot do, as the system admins will not upgrade the esx cluster to
the latest version (which is the only one that supports this required flag)
My reading of the flag is that it is related to memory usage when
transferring virtual servers across ESX clusters, which we do not do anyway.
However as a result of not being able to set this flag, the issue with
Ingres is stymied.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can proceed to try to identify the cause of
the connection losses?

Is there any sort of configuration (either Ingres or other) that might
increase the timeout window so that the connections to not fail this way?

TIA

Richard Harden
