Sorry gang,
Wojtek's email was an old one. Looks like the ingres news server has gone
crazy transmitting old emails. Michael Leo is working on it.
It is interesting to re-read some old emails and see how concepts and
products have developed over time.

Wojtek
I have sent this via OpenROAD Users as the hotmail account bounced...
I have cc'd David Tondreau on this as he is the guru on the subject.
My company (Colin Hay is a colleague) undertook a large transformation a
couple of years ago and we have not looked back. It achieved all our
objectives and more. It was not a sausage machine at all, but if you can
find a better way to move forward from ABF please let me know ASAP.
As Colin says, there are some limitations but nothing that I would consider
"uncommercial". There have also been considerable improvements in the
technology since then..
Happy to discuss further if you require a "user perspective". If you want
some serious technical details then David Tondreau is your man.
best regards

Thanks, Colin. This does look like a Transforge success story: a very
large ABF system 'transformed' rather then rewritten. We hadn't heard
about it.
You say that a rewrite would take forever - how long did the
transformation take? I assume that you used Transforge to convert the
whole system (rather then an easy section of it).
I expect that all of the generated OR code had to be manually reviewed.
Did you find it easy to read the generated code? How much of it did you
need to change? How maintainable is it?
In any event, it looks like our scepticism about automatic conversions
of large ABF systems might need to be reviewed. ;-}
