HI,
We were on Tru64 for along time (Ingres 2.6) but migrated to Suse Linux on Itanium (Ingres 9.1) when HP announced
they were pulling the plug on Tru64.
Our database is 2 TB with approx 700 concurrent users. Ingres runs fine on cheap hardware under a free OS

Hi Carlos,
Between us only, because I can’t promote any specific OS on this forum, due to my position.
The biggest Ingres installations I work on, are on HP-UX. The biggest one is on HP-UX 11.23, for 8000 actual sessions.
HP-UX was not very efficient with OS threads in the previous OS versions, (Tru64 was far more efficient in the past) now it’s pretty well fixed.
Quote:
From 11.23 with specific OS patches (mainly libc and pthreads) and accurate Kernel tuning, Ingres runs fine with a heavy usage. |
At present I would advise HP-UX 11.31 with specific OS patches and fine Kernel and Ingres tunings.
I am not aware of so many big references with AIX, except one in Germany which reached kernel limitations (in shared memory) but all the “standard” installations I did and configured in Europe, run fine with a few hundreds of sessions.
Ingres works fine on AIX for medium size installations. I just don’t really like the system administration spirit on AIX (smit). Supposed to be easy but it’s not obvious in fact.
I would choose HP-UX for my system. About disk arrays, EVA technology is really great.
Cheers
JL

Subject: [Info-Ingres] Ingres 9.x, choosing platforms
Hi all!
We’re in the process of changing our main Ingres platform, which is actually Alpha Servers with Tru64 Os.
Main players on this are IBM Power 6 with AIX OS and IBM Virtual Machines architecture and HP Itanium with HP-UX and HP Virtual Machines architecture.
I will appreciate your comments about experiences on these platforms and maybe some information about quantity of Ingres installations mounted on these kind of architecture around the globe.
Many thanks for your feedback
