Default [Info-ingres] NAIUA web site ... please comment - 09-13-2005 , 07:31 PM

Gang,

For many years Caribou has hosted the NAIUA website. The time
has come to renew the domain.

This puts Caribou at a crossroads.

Caribou is willing to continue to host the domain and webserver,
but unless someone steps forward and volunteers to update and
maintain the content, we are going to turn it off.

Maintaining the site isn't terribly painful, but it does involve:

- paying domain fees
- paying nameserver hosting fees
- managing the accounts
- monitoring the web server
- monitoring the ftp server
- performing security audits

I don't have the time to do all of the above and at the same time
manage and maintain the site content.

If someone wants to step up and maintain content, we plan to move it
to a small, dedicated, Linux server capable of running R3 where the
maintainer can have complete control over everything but the
firewall settings.

Please let me know what you think.

Cheers,

Hello Mike,

I have had a look at www.naiua.org and also www.giua.de from time to
time. As you mentioned, maintenance of content is one of the crucial points.

The NAIUA web site always seemed a little bit out-of-date.

How has content been maintained in the past? I suppose the traditional
way: web master edits a whole bunch of html files on his own PC with
tools like Frontpage or Dreamweaser and uploads all files to the FTP server.

IMHO opinion, switching the web site to a content management system like
Typo3 (www.typo3.org) can solve the problem:
- multiple persons could maintain content
- no html knowledge necessary
- no software installations necessary (browser based content editing)

Typo3 will run on any Linux box that has Apache + PHP + MySQL. Please
don't blame me for mentioning MySQL in this newsgroup...

If you want, I can help you setting up a Typo3 installation in my spare
time as I have some experiences with running Typo3-based web sites.

Regards
Gerhard

Gerhard,

I've had several responses and suggestions.

Just to clarify ...

I'm have no problems managing the machine itself. I'm looking
for someone to manage and update the content. If that involves
installing Plone or Typo3, I don't care.

I don't mind donating the sysadmin work.

I do mind if I donate this time for a site that is pathetically out
of date and unused! ;-)

Thank you very much for the offer. I will let all the respondents
know what I decide to do and the timing of it all.

Cheers,

Mike,

What type of activity does the NAIUA site get? Has there been a trend
upwards or downwards over the past year? This type of information
could make the decision to volunteer a lot easier.

Chip,

I can ship you the Apache access logs if you wish to analyze
them ...

Mike,

We would be happy to manage the content. Mark Brooks will be the
person primarily responsible. I'll have him contact you. This will be
his 'science project.' :-)

The only caveat that I see with regard to this is about the content
itself. We need to get in contact with whomever is in charge (Carmen
Huff maybe?) and just define the rules of engagement. Once that is in
place we can solicit new content (we can provide some r3 stuff) and
review / update the current content.

How does that sound?

Chip
