I am a long time Ingres user - but put yourself in a modern context. Anyone *developing web based applications seems to have *the choice of Mysql with either Perl or PHP there is never an option of Ingres. I am using PHP/Ingres at work - *PHP *is great - much faster to develop/distribute *with than OpenROAD for simple frames but ....... Ingres is losing / has lost *in the web hosting market (with bundled cpanel/phpmyadmin/perl/php/mysql) *to my mind that is where all of the new users are. Be interesting to hear an Ingres view of this. Anyone can make Ingres packages if they want to. Also anyone can use Ingres in their web stack if they have a good reason to do so. As a business, more evangelism might get them to a distant 5th(?) place, but I'm not an MBA and have no idea what their strategy is. They did lose a smart guy in ex-CTO Dave Dargo, who seemed to solidly grasp the possibilities of open source. |

If MySQL can be included as an Ubuntu package.....then why not Ingres ? |

If MySQL can be included as an Ubuntu package.....then why not Ingres ? A user group/community that is enthusiastic about Ingres and Ubuntu could pretty easily start promoting it - just put up a blog, and generate some packages for submission to Ubuntu upstream. Good for both platforms. |
