Default [Info-Ingres] Ingres 9.2 on Win2008 with UAC - 02-28-2009 , 09:29 PM

Hi everyone.

I've just finished installing ingres-9.2.0-143-com-win-x86-Full and
patch13247 on Win2008 with UAC turned on but there seems to be a couple of
gotchas.

According to online support notes UAC is supported but says all tools must
be started from the ingres command prompt. (DocID 415542)

Here is what I found.

There were no problems with the base install. I successfully stopped ingres
using ivm and then installed the patch. When I restarted ivm it seemed to
behave inconsistently. Ivm showed the Logging System was still running when
in fact there was no ingres binaries in memory. It seemed to have no
problems restarting the installation but once started, ivm was now showing
the Locking System and Archiver were not running.

errlog.log showed ingres started up without problem.

Manual start up/shutdown would not work

Start, run, cmd
C:\Users\ingres>ingstop
Access Denied as you do not have sufficient privileges.
You must invoke this utility running in elevated mode.

This is an Ingres message. Google search found the message in the ingres
source code.

In fact, you need to run via the special command prompt:
Start, Programs, Ingres, Ingres II, Ingres Administrator Command Prompt
Windows needs your permission to continue. click continue
C:\Users\ingres>ingstop
Checking for active Ingres processes in installation II...
The Name Server (iigcn) process II\NMSVR is running.
etc..

I found the same is true for Ingres Visual Manager.
When logging in to the desktop, ivm.exe starts up by default with the wrong
permissions. The green and red box in the system tray gives you the wrong
impression. Right click on the box and exit, then use one of the following
to restart ivm:

Start, Programs, Ingres, Ingres II, Ingres Administrator Command Prompt
C:\Users\ingres>ingstop

or

Right click on this link.
Start, Programs, Ingres, Ingres II, Ingres Visual Manager
Select run as administrator
Windows needs your permission to continue. click continue

or to make permanent changes to the link

Right click on each of these links.
Start, Programs, Ingres, Ingres II, Ingres Visual Manager
Start, Programs, Startup, Ingres Visual Manager
Select properties, Advanced, run as administrator, Apply
"Access Denied,
You will need to provide administrator permission to change these settings.
Click continue to complete this operation"
Windows needs your permission to continue. click continue

It is pretty messy in my opinion because every time you log in you need to
answer the "Windows needs your permission to continue." question.

The quick fix seems to be to turn off UAC here:
Start, Control Panel, User Accounts, Turn User Account Control on or off.

but this affects the entire server. Be sure to get customer/sysadmin
permission before doing this.

Without getting into a food fight about what UAC is supposed to
accomplish anyway, turning the whole thing off is probably not going to
be palatable to everyone, nor always easy to get consent for.

A more delicate option might be to go into Local Security Policy and
relax the behaviour for Administrators so that instead of prompting, the
session is automatically elevated as required. I don't remember
precisely how to do that and I can't be bothered to look it up, but I am
sure Google will quickly find the instructions for you. :-)

Of course there are other operating systems...
