That's absurd! It's about getting people to *pay* for using your
product/services. That's a game where Ingres handily beats MySQL.

MySQL can have all the free-loading friends it wants. I'm happier to
have paying customers.

The real question is whether that customer base is contracting or expanding.
Ingres had a big customer base when MySQL didn't exist, so it's a question
of whose going in which direction and what will the position be in ten years
time?

I'd like see ingres expand it's customer base.

Now it's just getting silly. In that case, I prefer my Swan with a side
of Condor eggs and of course, a Dolphin carpaccio appetizer, all
presented on a table made of ivory, placed on a rug made from Lion skin.
If I can have a round of bear-baiting while I dine it's sure to make me
stand up, in my Panda slippers, and toast the event with the Holy Grail.
Huzzah!

Now it's just getting silly.
Michaels point was far from silly - it's particularly pertinent. A lot of
software products gain popularity when adopted by startups and universities.
Later, when those students are working at real companies and growing
startups, those 'freebies' turn into sales as the company relies on support
in a commercial environment. Ingres Corp offers a similar thing, but there's
nothing making people choose ingres in preference to MySQL.

The world in which ingres grew up has changed drastically, not only in terms
of commercial realities and routes to commercial success, but also in the
usage of databases commercially.

The last I heard, back in the summer, it was expanding. I haven't had
an update on that lately.

I've got a meeting with Ingres next week where I might find out. I won't
make any promises to report back here, but I will promise to ask if I
can report back. Or maybe someone from Ingres will do it.

As long as we agree that a "customer" is a source of actual revenue and
not just someone who uses the product for free, then it's still a race
and Ingres is in front.

Amen to that! :-)

That seems to be the common implication on the ingres newsgroup - I'm not
quite sure why.

Yes, so the MySQL that ingres developers find amusing is kicking ingres
where it hurts with regard to jobs and by inference deployment. As Roy says
a lot of people using MySQL are using it as a freebie, but there still must
be a considerable revenue from commercial sales.

Ultimately, ingres must concentrate on growing it's user base - no database
can survive without doing so. I think the existing user base is probably
made from long-term ingres sites that are no doubt happy with the product
and new sites are mainly goverment related deals with large number of
licences at good unit price. That won't help market penetration. I suspect
the ingres psyche is till dominated by corporate goverment sales rather than
engaging the broad community of developers. I will smile broadly and shout
"Yay!" when a practical article on developing using ingres appears in a
mainstream magazine.

Hi Paul,

Christ I'm glad to hear you say this mate.

I'll be looking for a DBA job in Oz in about two years and I'd really
like to see something come up soon just to convince me there is a chance
of leaving Pommie-land behind.

The weather is kiling me.

I don't care if the jobs in Melbourne, Perth or FNQ!

In this current climate more than ever, customers are trying to cut
RDBMS
budget. I'm pretty biased when I say Ingres is the best value for money.
Low
price - free. Low maintenance - you just install it and it runs
practically
forever. Of course, customers realise they need to pay for
support/maintenance if they want certified product and 24x7 support and
free
upgrades.

I'm seeing increased demand for ingres DBA work because there more NEW
sites. The older sites provide basic revenue but they are mostly stable
and
things rarely go wrong.

From my limited exposure down under, it seems all the new sites are
commercial.
One of our business partners has installed over 100 new ingres sites in
the
last 5 years.
That doesnt equate to 100 new DBA jobs - rather just 1 or 2. But that
just
makes the product more attractive.
