Default Enhancement request to track object usage in Ingres - 06-23-2010 , 04:54 AM

Hi Gang,

I have just logged an enhancement to Ingres.

=============================================

In an enterprise class database, objects such as tables, indices,
procedures & rules may be frequently used or never used more than
once.

This enhancement request is for a mechanism which will permit reports
of how many times in a given class of objects, an individual object
has been used since the last restart of Ingres.

This will enable the removal of redundant objects and the refinement
of very frequently used objects

=============================================

If you think that this request has merit then please can you raise
your own Category 4 Support Issue referencing Issue 145234?

The more interest seen by Ingres Corp., the more likely it is that it
will be implemented in the near future.

Cheers,

Richard

If nothing else, I'd like to be able to track how frequently a
secondary index is actually used to satisfy a SELECT, UPDATE or DELETE.
My intuition is that (in general) a large fraction of indices are
useless overhead.

Of course knowing how frequently an index is used is not the only
measure of its usefulness. It may be used seasonally or for one
specific very important query. Still, usage statistics would be a
start.

A last-used date-time would also be useful .

Hi All,

This sounds like a case for IMA. Given that we already have access to a lot of cache stats all we really need is a list of db_id, relowner, reltid, reltidx, and dates (seconds since epoch should be sufficient).
