Default E_GC0123_GCN_NSID_FAIL during name server startup - 03-31-2009 , 11:30 AM

I've encountered a problem with Ingres 2.6 on AIX (bundled with
ARCserve). I was able to shutdown all the ingress processes
properly. But when starting them again, I got this error:

proddb ::[IIGCN , 00000000]: Tue Mar 31 04:13:37 2009
E_GC0123_GCN_NSID_FAIL Name server startup failed - can't set name
server public listen id.

As I am not familiar with Ingres, I wonder how I can troubleshoot
this. I googled around and found that one possible cause was that it
was not able to write to the "symbol table". However, I have not yet
been able to find out where this table was stored (it seemed to be a
file) and why this table suddenly stopped working.

Can any one provide some help?

Many thanks.

Michael

a lot of startup issues are caused by running them as the wrong
user...so were you running as user "ingres" when this occurred?

The Ingres was installed as part of ARCserve. I used "root" to run
the scripts provided by ARCserve to start/stop Ingres. Before that
error occurred, I started Ingres alone, performed some action using
scripts provided by ARCserve and stopped Ingres successfully. When I
tried starting Ingres again, it failed with that error. The sequence
of commands were like the following:

# Start only Ingres - this script calls ingstart
startingres

# Perform some db housekeeping with an ARCserve script
ca_dbadmin

# Stop Ingres
stopingres

# Start all ARCserve processes, including Ingress
cstart

Someone in another forum suggested me to ensure that the Ingres
environment variable II_GCNxx_PORT is not set before Ingres is
started. I don't believe ARCserve's script messed up the variable but
the system was out of diskspace shortly before that, so I am not sure
if unexpected things happened. I guess I will check that out first
and report back.

Michael

Make sure you're starting up as user ingres.
Make sure that the file $II_SYSTEM/ingres/files/symbol.tbl is
owned and writable by user ingres.

I've chmod symbol.tbl to make "ingres" its owner with appropriate
rights, and then unset II_GCNxx_PORT with ingunset. After that it
could be started again via the scripts provided by ARCserve.

Thank you for your help!

Michael
