Default Compressed checkpoints under Windows? - 05-03-2010 , 05:07 AM

Hello,
is this possible? How would I have to tweak the cktmpl.def file? Which
compressing programm could be used (7-zip, RAR etc.)?

Regards
Gerhard

Gerhard, did you try to use tar, gzip/bzip2 from the MinGW distribution?
('MinGW | Minimalist GNU for Windows' (http://www.mingw.org)) . I do not
use Ingres on Windows, but I think it should work without any problems
if you put TAR and, say BZIP2 somewhere in the PATH...

Gerhard, I've done this years ago for a customer running Ingres 2.5 on
Windows. I've used the RAR archiver and adapted cktmpl.def accordingly
(there is a HOWTO in the Admin Guide, I think, but I'm not entirely
sure). No Ming is required, I've used standard windows batch commands.

We went live with this and had no problems with it as far as I can
remember.

Cheers,
Thomas

Do not get me wrong - I am not advocating MinGW or something -
TAR/GZIP/BZIP2 that are built inside MinGW are native Windows
applications. You basically do not need to install MinGW to use these
GNU utilities on Windows. It should be enough to put those few
executables somewhere in PATH...

No worries.
Also worth mentioning that the compression tool doesn't even have to be
GNU. You can use anything you like including closed/non-free windows
stuff like RAR, ZIP,... as long as your tool of choice has a proper
command line interface.

One other requirement is that the compressed files can be uncompressed ... ;-)

In other words, be SURE to test recovery at least once a quarter.

Cheers,

Mikey

One of the easiest ways is to right-click the checkpoint folder and turn
it into a "compressed" folder. I use this method all the time for Oracle
backups/exports, no need to fiddle with any parametrer files (i.e.
cktmpl.def).

A very good idea, thanks for this. I activated the NTFS on-the-fly-
compression for II_CHECKPOINT folder and its subfolders and played a
little bit around with it. Execution times for ckpdb and rollforwarddb
are roughly the same and disk space saving in II_CHECPOINT is about 75
percent, very nice...
And best of all, no need to tweak the cktmpl.def file which could
easily "break" something.

Juergen, Dejan, Thomas, Mike, thanks for your various hints!

Regards
Gerhard
