Default Using ontape when the server is up ? - 08-29-2003 , 07:44 AM

Is there any problem in backing up the instance during normal working hours
? I'd expect there to be some head movement on the disks which might slow
down some user operations, but that shouldnt be noticeable. I'd just like to
be sure about this though.

No problem. Online backups have been supported for quite some time.

No problem. The ability to archive the server while user activity is going on
is why Informix's server was originally called 'OnLine'. The effect on users
is rarely significant.

The product was even designed around online backups. As to the original
question, the performance hit would be equivalent to one or two extra users.

I agree with the others that the product was originally called OnLine
because it stays on-line 24x7, even during backups. However, you can
consider an archive to be a large batch job. It depends on what other
users are doing, and OLTP access will probably not notice. I have seen
problems, actually after hours, when an archive clashes with other batch
jobs, they took a huge hit in performance.

Cheers,

Just provide a temp dbspace large enough to hold
previous-image of modified pages... ;-)

Meaning about 1989 (or 1988), when OnLine 4.00 was introduced. I
don't think Turbo 1.03.0n (the predecessor version) allowed online
backups, but I'd stand to be corrected by those who used it. The
reason OnLine was so named was because it could run 24x7 (why do
people think that running 3.5 hours or so a day, as in 24/7, is so
great? And 1WD wouldn't be as much fun as 4WD in a 4x4?) and still
have coherent backups performed. And there is the slight performance
degradation you referred to - but it should, usually, be slight.
I prefer my AWD car thanks. ;-)
