Default A special shout out to Jerry K - 02-19-2010 , 02:31 PM

Jerry,

Its so glad that you popped your head up out of the ground and responded toone of my comments about the DRDA stuff.

What's interesting is that your appearance also coincides with a new 'relaunch' of IBM's Informix web site.
Coincidence? I think not. ;-)

I just want to reiterate something... This "renewed" interest seems just a tad too little and a tad too late.
If you follow the whole map/reduce (Hadoop) and HBase stuff, you'll find that there's yet another college text coming out. Granted its a college text and well, since we're all long in the tooth IT guys, not that important. Except that well... Grad and Undergrad students are being taught HBaseand Hadoop while in school. Relational databases? Not so much. (Maybe in an MIS course...) But I digress. The point is that software engineers, comp sci types are learning about Map Reduce and HBase in schools. If they dotake a relational database course, its more than likely Postgres or MySQL unless Microsoft made a healthy donation to the school... ;-)

Today's undergrads and grad students, tomorrow's IT Architects. You know, the guys who dictate what products are going to be used in production environments at the potential customers of IBM?

Now I wonder how successful your 'educational initiative' were? You know the ones you did with the IIUG?

For those of you who think I'm just being negative and talking about thingsin the past, I did provide some critical insight in to this initiative that well, was pretty much ignored. Now to be fair, maybe they were trying to achieve a different set of goals and hence my criteria for success doesn't match their criteria for success. I mean heck, they could be considering it to be as about as successful as Microsoft's Window's 7 launch party packs.... ;-)

But hey! What do I know?
Its not like I saw Sun explode when they seeded the universities with theirworkstations and servers.
(Oh wait, I was there in the '80s. My bad.)
Its not like I didn't try to approach a certain University in Chicago that has several nobel prize winners in economics about a research project in Financial Mathematics. (Oh wait, I did that too.)

Shucks. I guess Occam's razor does hold true. Either that, or IBM's been taken over by a group of fscktards. (You pick which scenario is more accurate.)

-G
