Default RAC in Informix by year end? - 09-18-2007 , 08:00 PM

Taken from DBTA magazine.

Did I read this correctly? Does it mean that by year end Informix
will offer RAC.

=============================================
HDR, RSS and SDS servers and even ER can be combined in any way to
provide a sophisticated and flexible high availability solution. If
the primary server fails and, for example, a HDR secondary is promoted
to be the new primary, the whole IDS MACH 11 cluster reconfigures
itself. RSS and SDS servers automatically connect to the new primary.
Informix also supports the encryption of all network communication
inside a MACH 11 database cluster. IBM is currently working on the
implemenation of the update functionality that allows SDS servers
write access to the data. This functionality can be expected to be
available by the end of the year. MACH 11 is an excellent alternative
to the well known complexity of Oracle RAC/DataGuard.

Interesting technology but at least some of what I've read is nonsense.
For example:
"unlike RAC, MACH 11 does not require a high speed interconnect switch
such as Infiniband"
http://www.physorg.com/news98803681.html

I can't think of a single RAC customer of mine using Infiniband and I
can't think of a single member of the Oracle RAC Pack that has ever
said Infiniband is required. The Infiniband story is mostly FUD. And
the comment, above, is marketing-speak or ignorance or both.

It will be interesting to see how the technology handles the situations
that, in Oracle, stress the system such as multiple users accessing and
changing the same data and index pages at the same time.

Isn't that all in Cheetah?

Don't we have it now?

Madison - interesting comment that it's news to you - We have definitely
seen IBM position RSS and SDS as a RAC-like alternative.

Here's an example that comes straight out of the IBM sales play book -
http://www.informixcity.com/download...606200 7..pdf

Of course RDS and SDS are nothing like RAC at all. This sort of stuff
from IBM is very bush league and easily shown to not be credible.

Mark,

The only things that I know of which are going to occur prior to year
end are:

1) IBM's OnDemand Conference in Las Vegas
2) Halloween
3) Thanksgiving
4) Christmas

Anything else is news to me.
