This concerns IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.70.TC1IE Software Serial Number AAA#B000000.

We have a server running and Intel I5 1st edition with these specs http://ark.intel.com/products/43546?...ore%20i5%20650
It has 4gb of physical ram.

The onconfig has this:
MULTIPROCESSOR 1
VPCLASS cpu,num=1
VP_MEMORY_CACHE_KB 53200
SINGLE_CPU_VP 0

Is that right?

Why does it do this on a free version that should only allow 1gb of shared memory?
Are the virtual segments not counted in shared memory?
Why does IDS lockup and need a reset 3-10 times a day?
Nothing can get a connection so they boot the server (Restarting IDS does not always work and the box boots really fast.)

Is there anything special I need to do to get stability on an I5 on 11.70.TC1IE ?

I see you´re trying to enable private memory cache on your cpu vp, and that´s a resource not available on IE editions....

Other things, could you post the following output of commands below?
1) onstat -c |grep SHM
2) onstat -g env

could be helpful. But upgrading without understand what is happening is not
my usual practice...

Having VP_MEMORY_CACHE_KB and just one CPUVP is not very useful, but this
should not be a problem or cause for problems

Sometimes the error is like
Informix][Informix ODBC Driver][Informix]Read error occurred during connection attempt. com_error=Unspecified error
and there are various others.

If you attempt to connect via dbaccess, you hang and sit there.

Yes, booting solves the probem for an hour or 2 or 4 or more, but they cannot make it through a day.
I would like to upgrade to C3 to see if that fixes it, but the client is scared of it. This is their busy season.

No, it is not new installation. The old server died – mobo kaput. It was running win2000 server and IDS 9.4 ,
It had been running fine for 6 years.

I noticed today that the shared memory limit is 2gb on this one rather than 1. http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/da...le/dm-0801doe/

It should not even start... You're saying that the memory limit is inferior
to the initial memory allocation!
It would be interesting to see the online.log of the instance...

I see you´re trying to enable private memory cache on your cpu vp, and
that´s a resource not available on IE editions....

Why does it do this on a free version that should only allow 1gb of shared
memory?
Are the virtual segments not counted in shared memory?
Why does IDS lockup and need a reset 3-10 times a day?
Nothing can get a connection so they boot the server (Restarting IDS does
not always work and the box boots really fast.)

Is there anything special I need to do to get stability on an I5 on
11.70.TC1IE ?

It should not even start... You're saying that the memory limit is inferior to the initial memory allocation!
It would be interesting to see the online.log of the instance...

The memory you specify in SHMTOTAL and SHMVIRTSIZE is specified in KBytes.
The memory shown in onstat -g seg in in bytes

Informix ideally will not stop when you reach SHMTOTAL, but it's hard to
handle low memory conditions (sometimes to rollback you need more memory for
example).
This is the reason why in 11.70.FC3 and 11.50.FC9 IBM introduced the "LOW
MEMORY feature".

As I was saying, it should not stop, but it's possible/probable that you'll
have problems.

Again, your online.log should be interesting to see. I suppose it's changing
the values you give, since they're not acceptable. And any messages at
"unavailability time" would be most interesting.

It should not even start... You're saying that the memory limit is inferior
to the initial memory allocation!
It would be interesting to see the online.log of the instance...

I see you´re trying to enable private memory cache on your cpu vp, and
that´s a resource not available on IE editions....

I'd try increasing the shmvirt size for added segments. 8 Meg is not
all that large and I'm guessing that you're doing something that is
causing the allocation of a large block of memory, If that is happen
and the allocation is larger then 8 MEG, then we might be allocating
up to the max size that you're allowed to go and then aborting the
operation.
