Default IDS on a Mac? - 03-30-2007 , 08:36 AM

I think I posed this question about a year ago, but wanted to again to
see what interest there is in a Mac version for IDS. Nope - haven't
even tried to install it over Mac OS/X (which is Free BSD) although I
would be curious of any stories out there.

I think Apple is very well positioned to do some great stuff in the
next few years, including their server line. When I consider the
stability I've had on my Mac (was converted about a year ago), one
would wonder why not forge a path to use a "stable O/S" without blue
screens, security patch-of-the-day occurrences, the "included at no
charge hackers playground", etc...

AND - if I missed something w.r.t. availability on OS/X or Free BSD, I
apologize in advance. Been a bit busy chasing my relatively new (2@18
months) grandkids and running the family farm to be, not to mention,
being nearly 100% billable on Informix accounts since joining Xtivia.
(I do hope to have my grandson writing perl scripts for me before his
2nd birthday...)

Thoughts?
Mark.

Mark, when we heard you bought the farm, well, you know the saying...

As to Mac OS/X, its not FreeBSD. Its mach kernel based. Remeber NeXTStep?
Naw, you wouldn't cause you didn't grok NeXT. ;-)

If Steve wanted a data base, he would have picked up the phone and called
Larry.

Word of advice. Don't eat the mushrooms that grow underneath cow patties.

Apple does not want to be a server company or a general-purpose
computer company. They want to be a consumer electronics company -
i.e. they compete mainly with Sony, not with Dell/HP (to some degree
they compete with Microsoft). Running IDS on Apple hardware (running
Linux or Solaris x86) is an exercise in design over cost-
effectiveness. Apple systems (yes, XServe included) are not really
designed for custom systems development, even though they do have a
Unix "heart".

That said, IDS *may* have a place if it is set as a part of a system:
for example, a basis for an image manipulation and archiving system.
Whether this makes business sense for IBM to invest in that is their
call.

It was announced at IOD this week that a Mac port of IDS is in progress, targeted for the next point release of Cheetah expected next year.

This is interesting.
Politically speaking that is...

Wonder when Oracle will announce their port, or has Larry stepped away from
the helm and is no longer buddy buddy with Steve.

Or could it be due to location based services and the iPhone getting GPS?

But hey! What do I know? ;-)
(Seriously I know nothing... ;-)

Unfortunately not.

Silly me, I seem to recall that Larry Ellison sits on Apples board. Or am I
dating myself? ;-)

A certain Apple exec once joked to me (again, many moons ago) that if there
were a database port to Apple, it would probably be an Oracle port since
Steve and Larry are such good friends.

Having said that, there's this thing called "location based services". This
is a very young industry and there's a lot of things that have been talked
about, but if you get down to it, the logistics are a killer. (Meaning the
concept looks good, but try to implement them and you're in a world of
trouble.)

I think that there's one DB that could work, and no, its not DB2 and no, its
not Oracle.
(I'll leave it to your imagination who's left.... ;-)
