Default IDS 9.40.FC3 -- Any issues? - 05-19-2004 , 01:53 PM

We are about to upgrade our main production server on HP-UX 11i
(B11.11) to 9.40.FC3. 7.32.FC2 version of the tools.

We are also upgrading the OS from 10.20, so this will be a clean
install, loading data from flat files.

What I want to ask is, how do you guys find the 9.40 version of the
engine? Is it stable; are there any important known bugs I should be
aware of? Anything to be aware of when I set up the engine, or load
the data?

Also is anyone running on HP-UX that has any OS specific input?

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Have a look at http://www.ardenta.com/informix_dynamic_server.htm which
gives details of a couple of bugs we found in 9.40 testing still prevalent
in 9.40 FC3, particulalrly the one that stops you reverting to an old
version.

If it were me I would not revert the database server and OS in one fell
swoop. But then I'm quite conservative. Not so conservative that I'd still
be on HP-UX 10.20 now though ... :-)

Nothing specific Scott, but 9.40.FC4 is now available. I would always
recommend going to the most recent release.

It sounds like you will be performing a dbexport/dbimport type upgrade which
is what I always prefer if you are not under very large database
constraints. If you will be doing this on the same box as your current
engine, I would recommend you setup a completely separate $INFORMIXDIR for
the new versions so that you can switch back to your old versions relatively
easily.

We recently upgraded a client company from HP-UX 11.00/IDS 7.31.FC4 to
HP-UX11i/IDS 9.30.FC3 (their packaged application did not support 9.40 at
the time) and everything went very smoothly. We have several client sites
running 9.40 very happily (but none of them are on HP-UX 11i at the moment).

This is obviously good advice, it's the same advice I gave my boss.
So what we did was to upgrade the engine to the latest version
available on 10.20 first (9.21) from 7.3. Of course we couldn't do
the OS upgrade first because you can't get the 7 version of the engine
any more.

The 9.21 version of the engine has given us nothing but problems, so
we really don't want to stick with it after the OS upgrade. So,
anyway, that's what has brought us to this point, and I appreciate the
replies thus far.

IDS v7.31 FD7 for HP-UX 11.11 is still generally available on my clients'
Passport Advantage sites.

Not sure who told you 7.3 was not available anymore.

Check out the IBM Product Lifecycle for Informix

www.ibm.com/software/data/informix/support/plc/

Products are available to download from the PA site until the EOM (End
of Marketing) date and are supported for a further 12 months.

IDS 7.31 is not EOM till April '05 so is available until then.

However, IDS 9.21 has been unavailable from Dec '03 and will not be
supported as of the end of June this year.
