Default IBM Informix - Continuous Availability White Paper - 04-20-2010 , 11:32 PM

IBM Informix - Continuous Availability White Paper

What is this paper about?

IBM® Informix® is the database software voted #1 in customer satisfaction. Clients choose Informix because it is reliable, low cost, and hassle free. Solution providers choose Informix for its best-of-breed embeddability.

Yet, there are some people that still don't 'get' Informix, or realize the many benefits of deploying it:

- Informix is exceptionally hardware efficient, which means that (in the REAL world) you need to spend MUCH less on hardware to get the same performance as other products.

- Informix is exceptionally reliable, which means that (in the REAL world) you don't need to pay lots of people to make sure it stays 'up'.

- Informix is exceptionally scalable, which means that (in the REAL world) it can be idling one moment and then processing thousands of transactions the next with no apparent stress.

Advanced DataTools is working with Oninit, we are gathering data about what happens in the REAL world to support these assertions with empirical evidence. in the REAL world.

The data collected will be used to compile a report that will be made available to every CTO, IT Director and IT Manager. Along with this, they will receive a list of all the major application vendors that are now porting their applications to Informix V11.5 and a document outlining the key reasons to choose Informix.

Every response matters. - Start Survey here! http://www.advancedatatools.com/Informix/Survey.html

Win an Apple iPad. One randomly selected participant in the data collection phase of this research will win an Apple iPad, provided by Advanced DataTools Corporation, an Advanced IBM Informix Business Partner.

IBM Informix - Continuous Availability White Paper

LOL...

Now that's funny.

For the cost of licensing Enterprise IDS on a single 8 core Xeon box, I can buy and build a complete Rack of Hadoop machines, running HDFS and HBase. (Actually I think I only priced out against a 4 core license, so the additional 4 core license would go to cover the 10GBe switch and extra goodies like more than 32GB memory per node).

Now short of losing the entire rack, you have continuous availability. And you can support multiple (8) TB in a single 1U high box. Now how many of these can fit in a Rack? 42, less Switch size? 40? That would mean approx320TB of raw disk
in your cluster. And at 3K a white box, thats $120K. (You can do the mathtoo.) ;-)

Note that for 'continuous' availability, you need multiple machines. Again the exercise is completed and now you have multiple racks in the same data center. You want to split them across data centers? You can do that too.
(Although they would effectively be two clouds.)[And when I say clouds, Idon't mean virtualized environments. I mean clusters.]

And before OTC whips out a FOAD comment, the reason I point this out is that companies are starting to seriously look at this technology over traditional databases for massive warehouses, which is Lester's focus. And while the technology is relatively immature, its advancing at a remarkable rate. Not to mention that the kids in school are using this technology and are writing a lot of research papers on it. And since its cool, you can expect lots of kids in grad school lining up to work at your company...

Which brings me back to another point. IBM's missed opportunities. ;-)

Note to Jerry Keesee:
Jerry, you may want to pass this on to whomever is responsible for sales and marketing. They need to think outside of the box if IBM expects to keepIDS relevant past Sam's retirement. And you really should come to Chicago. You might actually sit down at a bar, have drinks and learn something. ;-)

But hey! What do I know, other than the fact that IBM's numbers are starting to hurt. ;-)
And that doesn't take a genius to figure out.

Have fun in KC next week. I'm sure that there will be a couple of conversations about Gumby. Maybe I may sneak in unnoticed... You never know... ;-)

-G
