Probably because you have a 32bit version and a 64bit version of the
library, and the 32bit location appears first in the ld search path
(LD_LIBRARY_PATH set?)

don't follow LD_LIBRARY_PATH (for -good- security reasons)
Maybe that's the problem. In that case the system seach path should be used.
Why a 32bit location appears first (if it does) in a 64 bit system is beyond
my understanding...
