My employer will be upgrading from DB2 LUW v8.2 to DB2 LUW v9.7 as
part of a Websphere Commerce migration. I have been asked about pros
vs cons of Linux vs Windows as they relate to DB2.

As a DBA, I have worked with RDBMs on Solaris and/or Windows, so
database administration doesn't concern me over much. Our system
admins are all Windows, as we are currently a Windows shop, and I
don't really relish the idea of having to become the system/hardware
admin as well as the primary DBA ( which tends to happen if the
existing system admins don't want to play ).

Does anyone know of any objective comparison/benchmark tests that have
been done comparing DB2 on Linux with DB2 on Windows? I have been
unable to find any reliable data other than the proverbial "Windows
sucks!!! WAH!!!" and/or "Linux sucks!!! WAH!!!", and I'd like to keep
personal opinions/preferences out of the list.

I was hoping that there might be some reasonable people here that
could point me in a good direction so I can provide my management with
a concise list.

a) As you point out, your sysadmins are used to Windows. If they are not
familiar with linux it will require hiring/training staff.

b) You wont be able to restore the win backups onto Linux (AFAIK) so it
will require export/load of data.

c) If something breaks when migrated it's easire to determine the cause
if the platform is the same.

With DB2 9 and if the database is small, there is not too much to do,
because you can configure many parameters to be auto configurable.

More than 90% of DB2 is common in all platforms, and the difference
are too punctual for every OS. So you do not have to worry about this.

I have worked in both environments, and I could say that once the
database is installed, you do not see the difference. However, you
have more control in Linux when installing versions, and upgrading or
updating. In Windows, you have to restart sometimes after
installations, and the registry could also become corrupt and make you
crazy.

My point is that the Operative System does not change the way you use
DB2. The "WAH"s are for the whole operative system, and probably you
already know them.

From the performance point, there is no difference.
Administration is also the same eventhough. There are small differecs,
i.e. integration of Linux Workload management with DB2 WLM:
