Default Control Center replacement? - 09-15-2010 , 08:04 AM

Hello,

The DB2 Control Center (db2cc) has been deprecated. In some ways, this is
good news, because it causes us trouble:

- it seems to rely on the Administration Server
(DAS) which cannot be LDAP-integrated,
resulting in strange, extra login-popups where
the user has to choose "Cancel", unless (s)he
is among the few users which have a local
account on the database server

- it sometimes closes, but keeps running in the
background, keeping catalog locks (seen on
Windows clients)

But it's unclear to me what the replacement(s) is. The manual's
deprecation notice refers to http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/
db2luw/v9r7/topic/com.ibm.db2.luw.idm.tools.doc/doc/c0055013.html for a
replacement tool. But at the mentioned page, there is a rather long list
of tools to choose from.

IBM Data Studio is listed first, but it seems to have deficiencies, for
example:

- It seems you cannot change the "dropped table
recovery" feature for a tablespace.

- When trying to change the authentication parameter
for an instance, there is no drop-down with possible
values; this seems to be a general problem for all
instance and database parameters.

- There doesn't seem to be a configuration advisor.

- When creating a database, there is a list of
"Country or Region" values. The list includes some
clear choices like Brazil, but also some strange
options like AA. On the other hand, it doesn't
include Denmark, Luxembourg and South Africa.
(Hint: The UN has an official list of countries
which IBM might want to get inspiration from.)

I guess that the Data Studio is in a Beta release. But when it is released
as GA: Is IBM Data Studio the tool which is to be first choice as a
Command Center replacement?

About one of the other tools mentioned, "Data Studio Administration
Console":

- When I last tried it (around a year ago), it needed to run as
root. Is this still the case?

- There seems to be a relation to the ITM Agents which recent
DB2s install (and I immediately turn off, as it runs as root
for no obvious reason). But on the other hand, at
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce...uw/v9r7/topic/
com.ibm.db2.luw.qb.server.doc/doc/c0055268.html
it is stated that "is intended for users of Optim(TM) Database
Administrator".
So what's the truth: Are ITM Agents needed for the
Data Studio Administration Console?

Troels,

We are aware that the Optim Toolset does not yet provide a 100%
replacement for Control center. Thsi will be addressed before Control
Center support is officially removed.
As to which tool will cover which function I cannot comment, but since
control center there have certainly been a few lessons learned and thus
some features may make more sense to be grouped differently.

Cheers
Serge
PS: I have passed your post along to the tools team and I will post what
I hear back if needed.

Thanks a lot. Please also tell them to try running the branding of the
tools through a "usability test". When you say "Optim Tools", I'm already
confused. I had gotten the impression that the Data Studio tools are the
free ones (probably to be bundled with DB2, like db2cc is?), while the
Optim tools are for-pay tools. - However, your post seems to imply that
all GUI- and Web-based DB2 administration tools will be put under the
Optim umbrella?

And, by the way, on the topic of tool naming:
The "Console" word in "Data Studio Administration Console" had me
thinking that it would be a text-based, smitty-like tool (which might
actually be handy). - While it is actually a web-based administration
interface. Perhaps "DB2 Administration Web Console" would be a more
suitable title.

PS:
If Data Studio (DS) is to be a replacement for db2cc, please make sure to
test it in a shared environment, i.e.: Where DS is installed once, and
then different users may start it having their own workspaces/settings.
After some testing, I suspect that it may not work well in that situation.

My post did not intend to imply anything of that kind.

Hello Troels,

you will find a lot of information within the Data Studio forum:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/fo...&categoryID=19

I have ask the same question and more how we can use the new Data
Studio. There are a lot of features missing.

Onother start is the wonderful overview about Optim Tools:

regards,
Joachim
