Default connect to a VM database - 07-12-2010 , 12:50 PM

I have a VMware image of Ubuntu Lucid and have installed DB2 express-
C, created a database and enabled TCP/IP for the same. I am using NAT
to connect to internet from VM.
I need to know how to catalog that in my host db2 client on windows.
Also if someone could help in the reverse - cataloging host database
on a guest OS client, would be very very helpful.

Hi Arun,

I'm not sure how it works with VMWare, but usually you need bridged networking
instead of NAT. Otherwise you won't be able to connect to your VM machine from
the outside world. But with Virtual Box there is a way to do port forwarding
when using NAT.

I suggest that you use a bridged network in your VM. This is probably easier.
After that you just need to catalog your VM ip address and that's it.
Don't forget to disable the firewall on Ubuntu for the DB2 port.

I don't have a VM at hand, but I believe that, even with NAT, there
should be a shared network between the host and the guest (because the
NAT'ing happens on the host).

Please check the VMWare network configuration to find out the shared
subnet. If you don't find it, just copy your network config here (ie.
"ipconfig -all" and "route print" on Windows and "ifconfig" and "route
-n" on Linux).

Yes, this is correct, but usually there is no port forwarding from the host
interface to the guest interface, if NAT is selected in the guest. At least
that is the way how it works with Virtual Box. However you can setup port
forwarding, which is a pain in the neck, if you ask me. I never remember the
commands for doing so. :-) I always have to check the manual.

Maybe the setup is different with VM Ware.
