This question is really two fold, and any responses would be greatly
appreciated.

I've been tasked to write up a proposal explaining the value of
upgrading our current Filemaker V6.0 to Filemaker 8.5 (or 9, depending
on when it gets out). I've been on the Filemaker site and see the
list showing all the new improvements, however, I'd like to know from
you who have 8.5, what improvement from V6.0 could you now never live
without and why?

Next question, the old question, how does 8.5 compare to the current
version of Microsoft Access? How does Filemaker V6.0 compare to the
current version of Microsoft Access. I am at a loss when it comes to
any knowledge of MS Access.

I've done searches on here and through Google, as well as the
Microsoft Access newsgroup, and the actual comparisons are slim, and
although the Filemaker Pro site does have a comparison chart, it's
geared towards V8.5 vs. Access (whatever version it is on).

What Pro's does the Filemaker community see in staying the course with
either version of Filemaker (V6.0 or V8.5) versus a switch to Access
(other than the commonly known time factor to convert files from
Filemaker to Access and all the man hours that would go with it). I
consider myself an Intermediate on the Filemaker Scope of things, even
though I am DBA for Filemaker on my project. As long as I have to ask
questions or reference this group, I just cannot ever consider myself
an Expert... but maybe one day...

Thank you for your time and help on this matter.

Access versus FMP is a matter of taste, time, how easily you learn. What you
need. Filemaker IMHO is much more intuitive, and for most of the time can
accoplish the same things. But then again I am a filemaker addict and surely
an access addict will give you a whole differen story. AND filemaker is
fully crossplatform!!!!

From V6 to V8 are a couple of really marked differences. The multi table
into one file. Far better integration of relations. The custom functions,
The copy and paste of items between scripts (advanced only). Oh well I will
never go back (only once done it for a client without XP) Far greater
security.

keep well, Ursus

This versus that is as old as two platforms. You will hear from Access
people that their favorite program is better, but FM is not only more
intuitive and easy to use and learn, but, unlike Access,
cross-platform. With only a few platform-specific things to (easily)
deal with, what you do in FM will work on both Windows and Mac in the
same fashion.
As far as features since 6, where does one start? The entire
architecture is different. Multiple tables in one file is certainly
better than multiple files, which includes the relationship graph.
Much more flexible (i.e., powerful) relationships. Much more flexible
and powerful privilege management.
In Advanced, the ability to copy and paste between files individual
fields, entire tables, and script steps. The Script Debugger existed
back then, but the Data Viewer is definitely a major help.

Filemaker is truly cross-platform. That's a big one for me. And you
can serve databases with up to five users (with one license for each
user) with the standard FMP app.
